On Monday, February 2, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, traditionally called Candlemas, marking forty days since Christmas Day. On this day, Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, fulfilling the Law of Moses and offering Him to the Lord (Luke 2:22–40). In the Temple, they encounter Simeon and Anna, faithful servants who recognize in this Child the fulfillment of God’s promises. Simeon proclaims Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for Israel,” revealing Christ as the Light of the world. From this Gospel flows the tradition of the Blessing of Candles. Candles symbolize Christ, whose light dispels darkness and guides His people. As a candle gives light by consuming itself, so Christ offers Himself completely for our salvation. Candlemas is also a feast of encounter and fulfillment—the meeting of old and new, waiting and promise fulfilled. Simeon’s prophecy to Mary reminds us that Christ’s light is inseparable from sacrifice, pointing ahead to the Cross.
Using Blessed Candles at Home: Blessed candles may be lit during family prayer, while reading Scripture, in times of illness or difficulty, or on significant moments such as baptisms, anniversaries, or the anniversary of a death. Lighting a blessed candle is a simple way to invite Christ’s presence, express trust in His care, and recall that His light continues to shine in every darkness.
As we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord, we are invited not only to receive Christ’s light, but to carry it into the world, becoming reflections of His hope, mercy, and love. If you would like your home candles blessed, please bring these to the 8:10AM Mass on Monday, February 2. Purchase your candles in the SLM Gift Shop or Pastoral Center (or any other place) on Sunday, February 1.
