Our parish clergy will be concelebrating. Fr. Michael Montoya will deliver the homily. Below is a little bit about him:

Fr. Michael Montoya is the administrator/pastor of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Claremont. He was an Associate Pastor at St Columbkille Church and Nativity Church in Los Angeles. Before that, he was also an Associate at Precious Blood Church and St Kevin Church in Los Angeles.

A brief history of Fr. Montoya: Fr. Mike was the founding Pastor of a newly established parish of Saint Anne in Peñitas, Texas, Diocese of Brownsville, located along the border of Texas and Mexico. The parish comprises four churches. According to Bishop Flores, the parish is located in the poorest section of the Diocese. As Pastor, he built a church, a parish hall, two parish offices, a rectory for the priest, renovated another church, and established the parish staffing and programs from the ground up. He saw through the growth of the four churches entrusted to him, and in 2016, Pope Francis sent a message to his parish to address the youth gathered at an Encuentro Juvenil.

Fr. Mike is a global leader in Catholic mission. He served as the Executive Director of the United States Catholic Mission Association (USCMA) in Washington DC, for more than 6 years. USCMA is the official network of all US Catholic missionaries serving here and abroad. While Executive Director of USCMA, he served as a consultant to the USCCB Committee on World Mission and collaborated in various capacities across the departments of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). He led the US church in mission discussions through the annual mission conference, the Mission Congress held every 5 years, and as lead delegate to international meetings on missions.

He is a co-founder of the Missionaries of Jesus (MJ). As an MJ, he has served in various leadership capacities. He served as a General Councilor and as the MJ District Superior for the Americas. He was also the Mission Promotions Director. Fr. Mike started the Missionaries of Jesus foundation in the USA.

Fr. Mike has worked for more than 25 years in multi-cultural and cross-cultural settings. He has been a Pastor along the Texas-Mexico border, in Los Angeles, and an Associate Pastor in Chicago. He also served as school director, vocation director, and internship director. He was ordained a priest on July 16, 1994.

He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree with a concentration in Spirituality and a cross-cultural focus from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. He also holds a Master of Divinity from Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, where he focused his studies on liturgy in a multicultural setting. He grew up in the Philippines; his family migrated to the US in the 70’s and 80’s. He himself migrated to the US more than 30 years ago.

    Parols
    • Parols — A Symbol of Light, Hope, and Joy

Parols, the iconic star-shaped lanterns of the Philippines, are a cherished Christmas tradition. They represent the Star of Bethlehem and symbolize light, hope, and peace during the holidays. Handcrafted from simple materials, parols celebrate community, creativity, and the joy of coming together — a bright reminder that even the smallest light can warm the darkest night.

Join Us for a Parol Making Event | Dec 13th | 5 pm | SLM Parish Hall

      • Purchase and bring your parol-making kit, and step-by-step instructions will be provided!

    History
    • Advent is a time of gathering with friends and family, and of prayer, to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Over 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines, fiestas honoring the saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Lord Jesus have grown and developed from popular piety and devotion.

Simbang Gabi, for example, is one of the Philippines' longest and most popular religious traditions. For nearly four decades, Simbang Gabi has been a cherished part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles's rich religious and cultural traditions. Simbang Gabi, Misa de Gallo (Rooster’s Mass) or Dawn Masses is a nine-day novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Expectant Mother of God.

It usually begins on December 16 (or December 15, when Masses are celebrated at dawn) and culminates on the morning of December 24. This tradition started in the early days of Christianity in Spain, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Simbang Gabi Masses in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles adhere to the liturgical guidelines appropriate to the Season of Advent.

This is an Advent Celebration for ALL parishioners! Feel free to wear attire from your culture of origin: Filipino, Irish, Italian, Ugandan, Japanese, Mexican, Native American, Norwegian, Korean, Puerto Rican, …
